Video: when was your Freshers and do you have any memorable highlights?

The native team certainly knows it’s way around a Freshers Fair – ensuring that Freshers runs smoothly is a major part of what we do. But what was it like for them when they experienced Freshers for the first time – as students? We asked some familiar native faces what Freshers was like when they headed off to uni.

Priyanka Nagpal, Key Account Executive, native: My Freshers was in September 2015. I remember it being very hectic, and a busy couple of weeks! Just getting to grips with moving out for the first time, and learning how to use the washing machine… it was very busy, very full-on, but lots of fun. My highlight was just getting to know everyone in my block. It felt like we were such a big family, because there were so many of us. Also, joining the cheer team!

Andy McCreadie, Media Revenue Director, native: 2007 was the year of my Freshers. I remember the experience, and I remember the people. Frankly, getting to know not only the union, but the local economy, local business came and shared their wares, so we were able to engage with them as newly-formed friendship groups.

Sarah Harding, Chief Operating Officer, native: My Freshers was in the 90s. It was amazing, actually, back then – because there really wasn’t anything else. It’s not like we had phones or anything back then! Everybody who landed got together and trounced off to Freshers, and it was just like one big festival for three days. The memory that stands out is that as I was going around the stalls and seeing what was on offer, everybody wanted you. They wanted you signed up, and there was loads of stuff on offer. So lots of enthusiastic people and lots of excitement.

Charlie Katirai, Senior Account Manager, native: It does seem like a lifetime ago. There was a lot of socialising – I got a part-time job – and there was lots of hanging around and making new friendships, with a little bit of studying, too.

Lauren Brown, People and Culture Director, native: I come from Jersey, so it was my first experience coming off the island and almost being an adult. I’ve always been really into music, and just being able to go through societies and clubs and see different bands, and go to different club nights – it was a real introduction into being an adult. The world is a lot bigger than a little island!
