Video: how did you feel during Freshers?

It’s no surprise that Freshers is an emotional rollercoaster. In fact, when we asked students how they felt during Freshers, the top three emotions they described were excited, anxious – and just plain overwhelmed. We put the same question to the native team – here’s what they remember.

Andy McCreadie, Media Revenue Director, native: I felt nervous, probably intimidated, and definitely excited. And really just keen to dive into something new. It was the first time, I think, that I’d chosen a path for myself – [I got to ] experience new people, new culture, plus a chance to reinvent myself – to start again, and generally just have some new experiences in a new environment.

Charlie Katirai, Senior Account Manager, native: It was definitely an exciting time, but there were also definitely times that I felt lonely. I remember being in halls that perhaps were not my first choice, and some of the other friends that I’d come to uni with were in halls elsewhere. But some of [my Freshers friends] are still my best friends to this day.

Sarah Harding, Chief Operating Officer, native: I really embraced it. That was what going to uni was all about, really. It was like that first wave of being a grown-up, and being able to do my own thing – and not to have too many boundaries around me. I think all of that was just something that I got really wrapped up in. I met a lot of people who are really good friends still, a long time on. So quite quickly, I met a few people who became my tribe, and I got going with it all super quickly. it was great.

Priyanka Nagpal, Key Account Executive, native: I would definitely say the whole Freshers part was quite overwhelming, but my uni put on so many amazing icebreaker events and fun things to do – to get to know people on your course, which definitely helped my nerves. Plus, everyone was so friendly and nice. You’ve got to remember that everyone’s in the same position. Everyone’s feeling a bit scared, a bit overwhelmed, a bit nervous. I went on to live with some people that I met in Freshers for the whole duration that I was at university, and I’m still best friends with a lot of them now.

Mark Hodge, Gen Z Marketing Strategist, native: It was just a really exciting period. I started doing sound technology. [It was great to] start that journey in a career that I was really passionate about. And then I was meeting like-minded people as well, who I formed really good friendships with. It’s great to mix and meet with different people that had the same interests, because I didn’t have that back in my hometown.
