Video: is Freshers a big cultural moment for students?

It’s one of the biggest moments in the student calendar. But you don’t need us to tell you that. Hear from George, Keshavi, Isabella and Mari-Jeanne on what Freshers means to them, as students – and why it’s such a crucial part of university culture.

The question:

Is Freshers a big cultural moment for students?

The answers:

Mari-Jenane, 26, Swansea University: So I actually do think it’s a big thing, especially for people coming straight from school. Like – the university experience is very different to high school, or if you do A-levels, or anything like that. So Freshers just allows you to get in, make new friends – and it’s very important to enjoy that, and have fun. And know that university is not just about academics – it’s about the culture experience, it’s about learning, making friends, and growing as a person. Freshers is a big part of that.

George, 19, University of East Anglia: Absolutely, I think it’s the biggest cultural moment for students because it really defines that stage where you go from living with your parents and just being a child to “okay, I’m now independent, and I’m an adult, I have money. I need to budget, I’m doing things for myself.” So I think it’s the biggest cultural moment.

Isabella, 20, University of Sussex: Yeah, Freshers is really hyped up and it is a good time. But at the same time, that’s only one part of an entire experience. So it does have a cultural impact on uni students for sure. And it does build a lot of people’s experiences. But it’s not your whole experience.

Keshavi, 26, University of Strathclyde: It becomes a bond, and it makes you connected towards the society; connected to the work; connected to what you are going to be doing in the year ahead. So it is important. Not just for [the sake of] fun, but also to carry forward things.
